Man Make-Over, 2014

Overview

Man Make-over is a satirical video and photoshoot playing with the roles of masculinity and femininity. The feminine aspects were the use of make-up (which is stereotypically a woman’s tool) and the use of certain language regarding beauty. For example, ‘it’s nice to make the effort’ and ‘you should put make-up on it will make you feel better.’ In contrast, there was also direct language to imply masculinity and heterosexual orientation –with asking about girlfriends, talking about sports and the gym. There was also use of advertising slogans such as ‘you will leave here a man’, ‘macho look’ etc. The idea behind this was to break down stereotypes and play around with them.
